B-52J Computational Aerodynamics

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is one of three main methods for the design and analysis of flight vehicles, and computational results complement theoretical and empirical methods (for early design) and experimental testing (which include both ground and flight testing). The advances of computational hardware over the past several decades have provided opportunities for computational analyses to become more accurate by increasing simulation resolution of the underlying physical models and the complexity of the physical vehicle being simulated. Coupled with increased hardware and software, there has been an additional emphasis by the DoD on digital engineering, or the use of model-based acquisitions. It is expected that digital engineering can reduce the cost while also increasing the acquisition speed of military weapons systems. The Flight Mechanics branch (EZFT), which is part of the Flight Systems Division of the Engineering and Technical Services Division of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, includes a CFD team that has been working for several years to provide computational aerodynamics support for US Air Force weapons system acquisition and sustainment. The B-52J Commercial Engine Replacement Program (CERP) is replacing the 1950s Pratt and Whitney TF33 with the newer, more efficient and reliable Rolls Royce F-130 engine. The new engines are expected to save the Air Force fuel and maintenance costs for the remaining 30-year life of the B-52. The new engines require a larger nacelle that impacts the aerodynamics of the B-52. This presentation will describe a computational aerodynamic model of the B-52J and associated CFD analyses in support of the reengining program.

IMPACT

Developed a new aerodynamic model of the B-52 with new engine nacelles, analyzed inlet distortion and drag; increased confidence in inlet redesign reduces program risk
