High Performance Computing Enabled Modeling Simulation and Analysis Institute Overview
The DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) sponsors Institutes to advance the use of High Performance Computing (HPC) to “win the fight.” The HPC Enabled Modeling Simulation and Analysis (HEMSA) Institute was initiated in FY24 as a partnership between the Air Force Research Laboratory and the DoD HPCMP with the goal to improve commonly used DoD decision support analysis by leveraging parallel execution at large scale on shared DoD supercomputers, and to ensure that the analysis software and relevant models support execution at higher classification levels when required. The HEMSA Institute also focuses on making modeling and simulation more intelligent and analyst friendly by incorporating advanced computational approaches involving Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). The Advanced Framework for Simulation Integration and Modeling (AFSIM) is the premier Air Force tool for engagement and mission analysis of military utility and is the focus of HEMSA. There are three specific objectives of the institute: (1) improve access and performance of current AFSIM on classified DoD HPC systems by optimizing the installation and performance on those systems, (2) improve future versions of AFSIM performance by software development of parallel execution strategies to search the tradespace of available solutions, and (3) improve the efficiency of military utility analysis by incorporating AI/ML reinforcement learning in pre- and post-processing of AFSIM execution. This presentation will show additional details of the approach and current status of these three objectives.
IMPACT
The Advanced Framework for Simulation Integration and Modeling (AFSIM) is the premier Air Force tool for engagement and mission analysis of military utility.  Modern scenarios involving complex interactions between numerous entities quickly move to higher classification levels and overwhelm desktop computing resources, slowing the time to solution and thus analysis and decision-making.  Objectives being accomplished as part of the HEMSA Institute leverage the power of HPC and AI/ML to drastically improve the effectiveness of AFSIM for timely engagement and mission analyses.
