Transforming DTRA's HPC Landscape: SEAL Framework for Modernization and Security

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) relies on High-Fidelity (HF) computer codes for critical national security tasks related to investigating weapon effects phenomenology and countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) to protect warfighters in the field. As these legacy codes evolve and DTRA's reliance on them increases, transitioning to modern application development and management practices becomes essential. As part of a DTRA-sponsored SBIR Phase II project, EP Analytics, Inc. is developing the Secure Application Lifecycle (SEAL) Management framework to facilitate this transition. Building on achievements with DTRA application teams, the SEAL framework has implemented an onboarding process for HPC applications, ingestion workflows for application testing data, and performance analysis capabilities that drive optimization decisions across HPCMP systems. This presentation will walk through SEAL's application onboarding methodology, data ingestion workflows, and deploying instrumentation-free performance analysis via the Perfector tool. We will highlight a case study that shows how SEAL helped identify performance issues encountered when moving an application to a new HPC system. Attendees will learn how SEAL's incremental modernization approach maintains application integrity while enhancing developer productivity and software quality throughout the application lifecycle.

IMPACT

Accomplishment: Created SEAL for secure CI/CD with automated validation of complex scientific simulations and code quality assessment; Result: Increased test coverage from baseline to over 100 additional tests for DTRA app while enabling reproducible results across multiple HPCMP systems – Ensured reliability and accuracy of weapon effects phenomenology calculations critical to national defense.
